From My experience with my team
I would like to share 3 essential roles of a leader

1. You are there to guide, not just command
Being a leader does not only involve allocating tasks, setting deadlines and approving completed jobs done by the members. You would need to be involved in the whole process by guiding and helping members who face difficulties in completing their tasks. As a leader, your contribution of new ideas is important as this will shape the direction and goals of your team.

2. You should be open to feedback
A leader is one who gives instructions, but should also be quick to listen and slow to talk. Bear in mind that leading a team is not a one-man show. In fact, the members are the backbone of your success. Therefore, it is essential for a leader to constantly gain feedback from members. Complaints and criticisms are expressions of what the members deem can improve the team performance. Of course as a leader you have to screen through and pick out those that are useful. By doing so, you can understand how to optimize team performance and to unite the team to reach set goals. If you usually get upset with suggestions, do a self-check and analyze what causes you to feel that way. Our emotions are usually sparked off by a previous incident or experience.

3. Your mind is in control of your emotions
The meaning of affirmative in this context is to be able to maintain a positive outlook. Undeniably, the journey of completing a project will not be smooth sailing. There may even be times when everyone is burned-out and at the verge of halting the project. In these situations, the leader has to make a stand and be able to motivate team members to continue on. A big no-no is to start scolding and blaming the members. Always think before you take any action. As a leader, you have to stay calm and optimistic, and direct the members to brainstorm for ways to end the project on a high note.

In conclusion, being a true leader is no where close to glamorous. However, it is a golden opportunity to bring your maturity to a higher level and a preparation to be able to lead. It is an experience that money cannot buy and books will not teach you. No one is born a leader, but you can make yourself a leader if you choose to soar above the crowd.
